SOH3 The Mental Urban Labyrinth

SOH3 The Mental Urban Labyrinth

Van Abbe Museum, Eindhoven, the Netherlands
September 4 - October 31 1999

The presentation at the Van Abbemuseum is a physical and mental experience of urban life. Seven transparent film screens measuring 3 x 4 metres have been set up crisscross like the route through a labyrinth. On each screen a loop is shown which is based on themes evoked by the sculptures for the people questioned in connection with their life in the city. Because the screens are transparent, each film can be seen on both sides of the screen, and other films can be seen through the screen. By moving through the installation the viewer can put together various combinations of images. Since each film is a different length, these combinations on different screens are never the same. A moving sculpture is positioned between the screens; together with the screens, they determine the architecture of the installation. The metaphorical sculpture and the multiplicity of visual impressions refer to the inner experience of urban life.
